The Kinect voice service is already integrated. Adding the ability to use the camera that is already present will greatly add to the value of using multiple Kinects through out a home. For example, it can be used to detect motion in a room by deteting changes in video frames. This can trigger lights. Also, this can be used for security and monitoring a home remotely.

Hey Nick, that functionality is in the works! We'll actually be using the 3D sensor to create a motion sensor (it can detect humans versus pets), as well as opening up the camera for security camera purposes.

Does anybody know the low-light / night-vision capability of the Kinect camera?

I can probably dig up whatever specs you need...what in particular are you looking to know? It does have a full IR camera: http://abhijitjana.net/2013/01/11/get-the-ir-stream-and-control-the-ir-emitter-kinect-for-windows-sdk/

However the internal IR blaster is optimized for 3D sensing, so you really need to provide a separate IR illumination source and switch off the Kinect's IR blaster.

I have an older Kinect 360. Which is not compatible with windows 10 with the Kinect 1.8 or later SDK. HOWEVER, I found a workaround. You need to download the KinectCam.AX and the Kinect 1.0 Beta 2 from microsoft and the Camera portion works (again.) I currently use ContaCam 5.3.0 (A freeware IP/USB security camera software with motion detection.) Will the "new" CastleOS camera system work with this configuration, considering the the Kinect driver is 1.0 B2?

I'm not aware of any Kinect models that don't work with CastleOS?

It's not a "castleOS" issue persae. It's the video camera associated with the XBox 360 Kinects with Windows 10. Unfortunately, with 1.8 and Windows 10, the camera function no longer works with programs like ContaCam. It would be great to be able to get the full functionality of this device. The fact that it is "old" shouldn't be relevant. Since, CastleOS Kinect updated the driver to SDK 1.8, ContaCam no longer will use the camera function. It's a windows 10 issue not a CastleOS one.
